WHO requests that countries continue rigorous surveillance and sequence sharing in light of the rising number of Covid cases.

The growing number of Covid cases has prompted the World Health Organisation to call for stringent surveillance and sequence sharing among all countries. The virus is mutating and evolving, according to the WHO. The new JN.1 Covid sub-variant and an increase in respiratory illnesses coincide with this.

Maria Van Kerkhove, the technical lead for COVID-19, described the cause of the recent spikes and the preventative measures that can be implemented. According to her, there are a number of causes behind the surge in respiratory infections, including an increase in get-togethers during the Christmas season and other diseases. According to Kerkhove, there are a number of reasons why Covid-19 is one of the diseases that is currently on the rise, including the fact that the SARS-Cov-2 virus is always mutating, altering, and circulating throughout the world.
