Washington: Kevin McCarthy, a leader in the Republican Party, has been chosen as the new Speaker of the US House of Representatives. After several days of electoral drama, he was chosen, making the election process for the Speaker the lengthiest in 160 years.

The 57-year-old McCarthy was chosen as Washington’s top lawmaker, who preside over House proceedings and is second in line for the presidency, with 216 votes in the final total.

To choose the speaker, the split Republicans had to go through 15 rounds of voting over four days.
