New Delhi: P T Usha, a former athlete, was elected without opposition as the president of the Indian Olympic Association, or IOA. As the only candidate, she won because no further nominations were submitted before the deadline on Sunday. The elections were scheduled to take place in December.

The former athlete was congratulated on her election by Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju. Usha is the first woman to hold the top position at IOA in the organization’s 95-year existence and the first Olympic medalist and international medallist. She was chosen to serve in the Rajya Sabha earlier this year as a Member of Parliament.
