Former Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma with as many as 11 MLAs from the Congress have announced their decision to join the Trinamool Congress. Mukul has blamed the failed attempts at reviving the Congress Party for his decision to jump ship. The MLAs submitted a letter in this regard to Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh yesterday and are set to meet the latter today. Metbah Lyngdoh has stated that he will examine the defection and merger of 12 MLAs to Trinamool Congress.

Along with Mukul Sangma, those who have joined TMC from the Garo Hills region are Zenith M Sangma , Dikkanchi D Shira, Miani D Shira , Winnerson D Sangma , Marthon D Sangma , Jimmy D Sangma and Lazarus Sangma. Whereas from the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region, those who quit the Congress include Charles Pyngrope , George B Lyngdoh , Himalaya Shangpliang and Shitlang Pale

If the split and merger is accepted, then the All India Trinamool Congress is set to became the main opposition party in Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, despite not winning a single seat in the 2018 Assembly elections.
