Payyannur, Kerala: A one and a half-year-old ostrich underwent surgery at Pothangandam Anandashram at Payyannur in Kerala’s Kannur district.

Rare surgery was required because the lower jaw was trapped in the barbed wire fence of the cage. A team of doctors attached a steel rod to the fractured site. It’s called orthopaedic wiring. It took about half an hour.

The 135kg ostrich was anaesthetized and operated on. Doctors Sarath and Cyril Aloysius were present, led by District Veterinary Surgeon Dr Sherin P Sargom. They said such surgery is rare in the country.

The bird is regaining health.
