New Delhi: The Rules for Uplinking and Downlinking of Indian Television Channels have been changed by the government. The new regulations would ensure simplicity of compliance for TV station licence holders and encourage ease of doing business by simplifying rules and procedures, according to Information and Broadcasting Secretary Apurva Chandra, who briefed the media in New Delhi today.

According toApurva Chandra, a new clause has been included to the updated rules to encourage the channels to air material relating to national priorities including agriculture, women’s empowerment, and education as well as public service.

The requirement for requesting authorization for live telecasts of events has been removed in the amended standards. Events that will be broadcast live must now be registered in advance. Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) firms have the power to request approval for TV channels, which is a significant decision that will increase ease of doing business. LLP and businesses would be permitted to uplink foreign channels from Indian teleports, creating job opportunities and turning the nation into a hub for other nations’ teleports.
