New Delhi: The government has decided to stop using the bulk connection mechanism and make biometric identification of mobile SIM card merchants mandatory.

Communication Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw gave a press conference in New Delhi and announced that all point-of-sale vendors must register as well. He claimed that measures had been implemented to protect users and stop the practise of bogus calls and online scams.

Speaking of the Sanchar Sathi Portal, the Minister stated that 67 thousand SIM card dealers have been blacklisted and 52 lakh fake connections have been found and deleted. According to Mr. Vaishnaw, 300 FIR have been filed. He said that 8 lakh payment wallet accounts and 66,000 Whatsapp accounts had been disabled.

The new programme states that if a Point of Sale engages in any criminal activity, it would be dismissed and placed on a three-year blacklist. In order to prevent the misuse of printed Aadhaar, it would be required to scan the QR code to obtain the demographic information.
