OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, has announced its plans to establish its first Indian office in New Delhi later this year. This milestone marks a significant step in OpenAI’s global expansion, as India emerges as its second-largest market by user numbers and sees rapid growth in AI adoption.
The company has already registered itself as a legal entity in India and started building a local team. The New Delhi office will focus on making advanced AI tools more accessible and affordable, tailoring solutions to the diverse needs of India’s population, comprising students, educators, developers, and businesses. OpenAI will closely collaborate with government bodies, industry partners, and academic institutions to drive innovation and support the government’s IndiaAI Mission.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized India’s vast potential as a global AI leader, citing its exceptional tech talent, thriving developer ecosystem, and strong government support. “Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India,” Altman said.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw described OpenAI’s move as a recognition of India’s growing leadership in digital innovation and the ongoing efforts to build a trusted, inclusive AI ecosystem. He welcomed OpenAI’s commitment to supporting the IndiaAI mission and advancing responsible AI development for every citizen.
In conjunction with this announcement, OpenAI recently launched its most affordable monthly subscription plan for ChatGPT in India and plans to host its first Education Summit and Developer Day to engage with the country’s vibrant AI community. The new office will also help address local challenges, including AI-powered solutions for agriculture, recruitment, and governance.
