Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has announced the launch of the K-Home scheme, an initiative aimed at transforming vacant and unused houses- many owned by Non-Resident Indians into budget-friendly tourist accommodations.
The project, inspired by Japan’s Minka model, will begin with a pilot phase in high-demand tourist hubs such as Fort Kochi, Munnar, Kumarakom, and Kovalam, covering a 10-kilometre radius. An initial allocation of ₹5 crore has been made for its rollout.
Officials say the scheme will provide an additional income stream for property owners while expanding Kerala’s affordable lodging options. However, some licensed homestay operators have raised concerns that the new brand could blur distinctions between traditional homestays, where hosts reside on-site, and unattended rental properties.
Tourism Minister P. A. Mohamed Riyas said detailed guidelines and verification procedures are being prepared, with plans to expand the initiative across the state if the pilot proves successful.
