Kochi: Kumbalangi Panchayat, known as a model in waste management, has launched its own organic fertiliser branded ‘Kumbos’, produced at the Thumboormuzhi-model composting unit set up in Suchitwatheeram Park.
The Thumboormuzhi model refers to a technique of community aerobic composting using specially designed bins (or units) that allow for effective decomposition of organic waste in the presence of air (aerobic conditions). This model has been adopted in many parts of Kerala for decentralised organic waste processing, reducing landfill burden and transforming waste into a usable soil amendment.
The initiative, in collaboration with Eco Nova Green Solutions, processes organic waste from households, resorts, auditoriums and catering units through six aerobic bins, each with a 3-tonne capacity.
The Kumbalangi Panchayat has been recognized under Kerala’s “Waste-Free New Kerala” campaign for setting up the best community-level organic waste processing unit in its district.
‘Kumbos’ is expected to boost soil fertility while reducing dependence on chemical fertilisers, making the project both eco-friendly and income-generating for the Panchayat. The model has already won recognition under Kerala’s Waste-Free New Kerala campaign and was showcased at the state’s Vruthi Conclave.
With this, Kumbalangi strengthens its position as a pioneer in sustainable waste management, combining environmental responsibility with community benefit.
