NEW DELHI: The Centre has emphasised that there is no limitation on the import of IT hardware such as tablets and laptops, as such products can be imported by enterprises or dealers with a valid licence. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade, DGFT, published a notification about this yesterday, citing user safety concerns. According to sources, the DGFT has developed a platform where enterprises and dealers can apply online for a licence, which would be provided fairly shortly if all details are filled out correctly. According to the sources, the government is also providing every assistance to industry for the clearance of any shipments in route.

India has significant capacity and capability to manufacture IT Hardware devices and expand production. The government has announced the launch of the Production Linked Incentive, PLI, Scheme 2.0 for IT Hardware. In five to six years, the initiative is estimated to lead to a total production of about 3.29 lakh crore rupees in IT Hardware and create 75,000 more jobs. 44 companies have already been registered under it.
