In a major shift towards modernizing public utilities, Kochi is set to become the first city in Kerala to bring private sector expertise into managing its water supply system. The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has partnered with SUEZ, a global leader in water management, to operate and maintain Kochi’s drinking water network.
The initiative forms part of a ₹1,245 crore project funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), aimed at improving water quality, reducing distribution losses, and ensuring round-the-clock water supply for city residents.
Officials said the move is expected to introduce advanced technology and better efficiency in the city’s water management, addressing long-standing issues such as leakage, irregular supply, and outdated infrastructure.
Kochi’s model is being viewed as a pilot project that could pave the way for similar collaborations in other cities across Kerala if successful.
While the decision has drawn appreciation for its promise of improved service, experts emphasize the need for strong public monitoring to ensure accountability and affordability in the new system.
