Chandbali earrings or moon earrings came into existence during the Mughal rule. They are traditionally designed to represent a crescent shaped moon encircled with a full moon. History suggests that the conquering Mughal rulers kept the crescent symbol in their coinage, especially during the early years of the caliphate, and further popularized it. It is hence often considered as a symbol of Islam by extension. This special symbol in turn, went onto getting imbibed in the jewellery designed during those times and was mostly signified with Chandbalis.
A little history
The charming earrings were reportedly first designed in Rajasthan in the 19th century and adorned by royal ladies, but their significance grew when they were endorsed by the womenfolk of Hyderabad’s famous Nizam family, and then there was no looking back for these gorgeous earrings.
The comeback
Chandbalis are timeless, but they did disappear post 70s and were only spotted at Muslim weddings, until Bollywood took a liking to these beauties which can be teamed up with absolutely anything from a lehenga, sharara to an anarkali. And, now Indian women can’t do without this accessory. We got in touch with some of the finest names in the jewellery business to know what makes Chandbalis so special for women.
Truly versatile
Ishu Datwani, Founder, ANMOL feels there is nothing more elegant than these earrings. “An elegant pair of Chandbalis can instantly elevate your look and add a touch of vintage charm & glamour to your ethnic look. Chandbalis complement most Indian traditional outfits, colours and occasions which makes them very versatile, wearable and a festive favourite. It is classic and timeless piece of statement jewellery which is always in fashion.
Unmatched appeal and variety
Another reason for the popularity of these royal earrings is the fact that they come in a variety of styles – from gold, silver and oxidised, to stone encrusted chandbalis, these make for great statement pieces on special occasions. “These earrings have a magnificent appeal that is unmatched with any other style. In India, we celebrate so many festivals and attend innumerable weddings that make it necessary to get ready in ethnic attire along with jewellery that will make us stand out. Chandbali earrings are beautiful jewellery that can be paired with your sari, anarkali, lehenga, suits etc and the best part, they come in many variations made by incorporating enamelling, kundan-jadau and gemstones to choose from. Chandbalis remain immensely popular among Bollywood stars who opt for these to nail the traditional look,” says Vaibhav Saraf, Director, Aisshpra Gems and Jewels.
There is one for everyone
Snehal Choksey, Director, Shobha Shringar Jewellers is of the opinion that Chandbalis have come of age because anyone and everyone can wear these. “Chandbalis are a statement pair of vintage earrings that take inspiration from the Mughal Era and have evolved a lot with time and trends. From the Mughal era of bygones to the modern day we live in today, the crescent-shaped statement earrings have managed to woo Indian women for ages. Fashionistas are also seen mixing it up with western outfits for their versatility. An authentic Chandbali is supposed to come with intricate Meenakari and a display of rich colour play and can be studded with Jadau Kundan and Polki. The modern avatar of this is seen in fine-cut diamonds and rose gold as well. For girls, who want to create a memorable look but also not go overboard with accessories, this is a must-have.
