New Delhi: The National Green Hydrogen Mission has advanced significantly as a result of the government’s notification of the Green Hydrogen Standard for India. The emission thresholds that must be met for hydrogen production to be categorised as Green, or coming from renewable sources, are set forth in the standard, which was released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. Both electrolysis-based and biomass-based hydrogen production processes are included in the definition’s scope.
The Ministry has opted to define green hydrogen as having a well-to-gate emission, including water treatment, electrolysis, gas purification, drying, and compression of hydrogen, of no more than 2 kg CO2 equivalent/kg H2, after consultations with various stakeholders. The notification states that the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy shall specify a precise methodology for measurement, reporting, monitoring, on-site verification, and certification of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
The announcement further states that the Ministry of Power’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency should serve as the Nodal Authority for the accreditation of organisations for the monitoring, verification, and certification of projects for the production of green hydrogen. The Green Hydrogen community in India now has a great deal of clarity thanks to the announcement of the Green Hydrogen Standard, which was much anticipated. India is one of the first few nations in the world to announce a definition of green hydrogen with the release of this announcement.
