From Queue to Click: BEVCO Plans Online Liquor Sales in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram : The Kerala State Beverages Corporation (BEVCO) has submitted a fresh proposal to the state government to launch online liquor sales via a mobile app, with age verification for customers aged 23 and above.

The plan aims to reduce crowding at BEVCO’s 283 outlets, boost revenue, and introduce low-alcohol and foreign-made beers to attract tourists. Delivery partnerships with platforms like Swiggy are under consideration.

BEVCO recorded ₹19,700 crore in revenue in 2024-25, up from ₹19,050 crore the previous year. Officials believe digital sales could significantly increase this figure.

However, the move faces legal and political hurdles, requiring amendments to the Abkari Act and the Foreign Liquor Rules of 1953. Excise Minister M. B. Rajesh confirmed no decision has been made, citing the political sensitivity ahead of local elections.

Supporters highlight convenience and economic benefits, while critics warn of easier access to alcohol and potential misuse.

The proposal now sits at the intersection of revenue strategy and election politics. In Kerala’s high-stakes political season, even a liquor delivery app could pour more than just spirits into the mix – it could stir the polls themselves.
