New Delhi: The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023 (DPDP Bill), which was approved by both Houses of Parliament, has received the assent of President Droupadi Murmu. The DPDP Bill was approved by the Rajya Sabha in a unanimous vote on August 9 while the Lok Sabha approved it by voice vote on August 7.
The Bill intends to manage digital personal data by striking a balance between the necessity to legitimately process such data for pertinent reasons and the right of individuals to have their data protected. The Bill states that a person may process a person’s personal data for a lawful purpose with that person’s consent and for specific legitimate uses.
The Data Protection Board of India would be established under a clause of the Bill. The legislation, according to earlier comments from Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, is meant to safeguard the digital personal data of 140 crore Indians.
