Amazon.com Inc. has disabled comments, reviews or ratings on Chinese President Xi Jinping’s book, ‘The Governance of China’. The move was part of a broader campaign so that Amazon could continue with business in China. The book talks about Xi Jinping’s doctrine of ‘Socialism with Chinese Characteristics.’ ‘The Governance of China’ has been published in Pashto, Hindi, Sinhalese, Dari and English
The reviews and ratings were disabled two years ago after Beijing passed a judgement saying that the company should disable customer ratings and reviews in the country. The company had been receiving requests from watchdogs to take down certain content in 2018, mostly sensitive ones.
An Amazon spokesperson told Bloomberg News that it “complies with all applicable laws and regulations, wherever we operate, and China is no exception”.
US firms, such as Yahoo! and Microsoft Corp.’s LinkedIn, have exited the Chinese market this year, citing an increasingly challenging business and legal environment in the country, a Reuters report reads.
