Thiruvananthapuram :
In a major step to strengthen welfare support for the state’s expatriate community, the Government of Kerala has launched the Norka Care Insurance Scheme, a comprehensive health and accident insurance program designed exclusively for Non-Resident Keralites (NRKs).

The scheme was inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who emphasized that Kerala has consistently set benchmarks in providing quality and timely services to its global diaspora. “Our expatriates are the backbone of Kerala’s economy, and it is the government’s responsibility to ensure their well-being and security, no matter where they live,” he said.

What the Norka Care Scheme Offers

  • Comprehensive Health Coverage: Medical expenses for treatment in both Kerala and abroad.
  • Accident Insurance: Financial protection in case of accidental injuries or fatalities.
  • Affordable Premiums: Specially structured to ensure accessibility for workers in the Gulf and other countries.
  • Family Benefits: Certain packages also extend partial coverage to family members in Kerala.

Why It Matters

Kerala has over 35 lakh expatriates, with a majority working in the Gulf countries. Their remittances are a key driver of the state’s economy, contributing significantly to household incomes, infrastructure, and social development. However, many expats face challenges such as lack of insurance, workplace accidents, and limited healthcare access abroad.

The Norka Care scheme, implemented through Norka Roots, aims to bridge this gap by providing a safety net, ensuring that the state remains connected with its global workforce.

With this initiative, Kerala once again positions itself as a pioneer in expatriate welfare, reinforcing the state’s commitment to protecting and empowering its NRK community.
