Port Blair: The new integrated terminal building at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair will be opened by the prime minister, Narendra Modi. Through video conference, Mr. Modi will give it a formal opening. The opening of the new terminal building, constructed for approximately 710 crore rupees, would be crucial in improving Andaman and Nicobar’s connectivity.
The new terminal building will have a total built-up area of roughly 40,800 sqm and be able to accommodate about 50 lakh passengers a year. At a cost of 80 crore rupees, an apron suited for two Boeing-767-400 and two Airbus-321 types of aircraft was also built at the airport, allowing for the simultaneous parking of ten aircraft.
The airport terminal’s shell-like form, inspired by the sea and its surrounding islands, is its architectural design. In order to reduce heat gain, the new airport terminal building has a double-insulated roofing system, skylights that maximise the amount of abundant natural sunlight that enters the building during the day to reduce the need for artificial lighting inside, LED lighting and low heat gain glazing.
Other elements of the terminal building include a 500 KW solar power plant, an on-site sewage treatment facility with 100% of processed effluent utilised for landscaping, and rainwater collection in an underground water tank. Port Blair is a well-liked vacation spot since it serves as a starting point for trips to the beautiful Andaman and Nicobar islands.
