LONDON:In the recently concluded British general election, the world’s first openly gay Muslim MP has been elected who will be part of Boris Johnson’s new government.
Imran Ahmad Khan who was born in Wakefield and describes himself as a “Proud Yorkshireman” made history on Friday (13 December) when he was elected as MP for Wakefield in Yorkshire..
Ahmad Khan also happens to be the first Ahmadi Muslim ever to be elected to British parliament and his father was born in Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province.
The Ahmadiyya Muslims are legally and constitutionally not considered as Muslims in Pakistan and have been subjected to state-backed discrimination.
In Pakistan where their placesof worship have often been demolished and many have been killed extra-judicially by Sunni Islamists who have the backing of the state.
A staunch advocate of Brexit, Ahmad Khan said, “I think the people of Wakefield are tired of politicians telling them what to think. There are a lot of daughters, husbands, wives, children of coal miners that were very, very annoyed that they had been told by Islington Remainers and others… they were told when they didn’t agree with those people, that they were either uneducated, stupid, racist, or wrong, and there was a massive rejection of this.”
