MUMBAI:This time last year, Bollywood actress Rhea Chakraborty wasn’t a part of movie-mad India.
But in the six weeks following Sushant Singh Rajput’s death in Mumbai on June 14, Chakraborty’s name has been uttered in every Indian household that has mourned a promising icon like Rajput.
In his First Information Report (FIR) filed with the police in his native town Patna in Bihar, Rajput’s father accused Chakraborty of abetting his son’s suicide, transferring huge amounts of money out of his bank accounts and using his medical records in order to blackmail Rajput about his mental health.
The Bengali talent, born and raised in Bengaluru, began her career working as a presenter on MTV India in late 2000 and took the plunge into acting in 2013 with the Hindi film ‘Mere Dad Ki Maruti’. But her first brush with cinema was in Telugu movie ‘Tuneega Tuneega’ in 2012.
Chakraborty’s father was an officer in the Indian Army, but she was a Bollywood acting hopeful from the word go.
Her career got a jump start in television when she participated in the talent hunt ‘MTV India’s TVS Scooty Teen Diva’ and emerged a runner-up. She topped this up by hosting several MTV shows such as ‘TicTac Collage’ and ‘MTV Gone In 60 Seconds’. Just like most presenters, she exuded a sunny and amicable personality.
Her acting credits also include Yash Raj Films ‘Bankchor’ and cameo appearances in films like ‘Half Girlfriend’. Chakraborty also acted in an underwhelming feature called ‘Jalebi’ in 2017.
To label Chakraborty as a struggling actress, who was still looking for that elusive big Bollywood break, wouldn’t be an understatement.
It was her personal life with Rajput that gained more traction than her work. While the two never acknowledged their relationship in public while Rajput was alive, she was reportedly one of the last few people that the actor tried to reach over the phone before he took his life at his home in Mumbai.
This latest twist in the case comes as a bit of a shock, considering Chakraborty was one one of the first people to request a CBI probe into Sushant Singh’s death in the first place.
“I request you with folded hands to initiate a CBI enquiry. I only want to understand what pressures prompted Sushant to take this step,” she had written in a tweet addressed to Home Minister Amit Shah earlier this month.
In another lengthy post, the 28-year-old paid tribute to the late actor, saying she was still struggling to face her emotions, and that Rajput was the one who made her believe in love.
Over the last few weeks, several pictures of her with filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, who has also been questioned by the Mumbai police in the case, have circulated on social media.
Sushant Singh is said to have entered a relationship with the Jalebi actor after parting ways with actor Ankita Lokhande .
Ankita Lokhande, ex-girlfriend of Sushant Singh Rajput, had reportedly informed Bihar Police that the late actor was quite unhappy because Rhea Chakraborty harassed him.
Ankita made her claim while she was visiting Sushant’s family in Patna.
Ankita told the police that through a chat around the time of release of her Bollywood debut film, “Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi” in 2019, Sushant mentioned being “harassed” by his then girlfriend Rhea.
A report in dnaindia.com corroborated the news saying a source had informed the website that, according to Ankita, Sushant had told her that he is “quite unhappy in the relationship and wants to end it as Rhea harassed him”. Ankita’s above-mentioned chat with Sushant was shared with the police at that time.
Sushant dated Ankita, his co-star of the hit TV series “Pavitra Rishta”, for almost six years after which they parted ways. After Sushant’s demise in June, Ankita had visited the actor’s family, when they were in Mumbai to perform his last rites.
During her visit to Patna later, Ankita had reportedly shown the above-mentioned chats to Sushant’s sister Shweta Singh Kirti.
On Tuesday, it came to light that Sushant’s father KK Singh had filed an FIR at the Rajiv Nagar police station in Patna accusing six people, including his girlfriend Rhea, for abetment to suicide.
On Wednesday, Ankita took to social media to share a cryptic post. The actress tweeted an image that reads “Truth Wins”, on her verified account.
