New Delhi: The government has stated that imports of laptops, tablets, and personal computers would require a valid licence beginning November 1st, this year. According to a notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, import consignments can be approved without a licence for limited imports until October 31st of this year.

The Centre has stated that there is no limitation on the import of IT hardware such as tablets and laptops because such products can be imported by enterprises or dealers who get a valid licence. The DGFT has created a webpage where businesses and dealers can apply for licences online.

India has significant capacity and capability to manufacture IT Hardware products and to increase output further. The government has announced the launch of the Production Linked Incentive, PLI, Scheme 2.0 for IT Hardware. In five to six years, the initiative is estimated to result in the manufacturing of about three lakh 29 thousand crore rupees worth of IT hardware and the creation of 75 thousand more jobs.
